Ward Eight

Ingredients

The Ward Eight is essentially Boston’s version of the whiskey sour, replacing sugar with grenadine, and adding orange juice. Many bartenders insist that the Ward Eight is only to be made with rye. In 1898 Democratic political czar Martin M. Lomasney hoped to capture a seat in the state’s legislature, the General Court of Massachusetts. Lomasney held considerable power in the city for nearly 50 years. The story goes that the drink was created to honor his election and the city’s Ward 8, which historically delivered him a winning margin.[

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • 3/4 oz Lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz Orange juice
  • 1 tsp. Grenadine

PREPARATION

Add all of the ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. For a slight variation, add it to a glass with ice and top with a little club soda.
