Tart N’ Sand

Quick Facts

Cocktail History

Everyone loves a riff or variation on a famous cocktail, just to switch things up. That’s exactly what we have with the Tart N’ Sand which was created by bartender Charlotte Voisey’s. It was affectionately known as “the Scotsman’s sip” because of its use of scotch whiskey. This cocktail is a riff on the classic Blood and Sand recipe. Voisey’s recipe keeps only the scotch, replacing everything else with more complex, interesting choices: muddled brandied cherries instead of cherry brandy, Lillet Rouge (a red wine apéritif) in place of sweet vermouth, and a combination of blood orange liqueur and fresh citrus juices instead of orange juice.

Ingredients

  • 4 whole Brandied cherries
  • 3/4 oz Scotch
  • 3/4 oz Blood orange liqueur
  • 3/4 oz Red wine apéritif
  • 1/2 oz Grapefruit juice
  • 1/2 oz Lemon juice
  • 2 dashes Orange bitters

Cocktail Preparation

Muddle the cherries in a shaker. Add the remaining ingredients and shake well. Double-strain through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry and/or orange slice, or any other citrus you have on hand.
