Cocktail History
The Martinez is part manhattan and part martini and has appeared in cocktail books dating back to 1884. The history of this cocktail is told from a story involving the famous bartender, Jerry Thomas, who invented the cocktail for a customer traveling to the port city of Martinez, CA. The city of Martinez, however, insists that a local bartender concocted the drink.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Gin
- 3/4 oz Sweet Vermouth
- 1/4 oz Maraschino Liqueur
- Dash of Angostura Bitters
- Garnish: Orange Twist
Cocktail Preparation
Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and orange bitters. Stir until very cold then strain into a chilled cocktail/coupe glass. Twist orange peel over the cocktail to express its oils. Rub rim of the glass with peel and garnish.
