Manhattan

Ingredients

The whiskey-based Manhattan is one of five cocktails named for a New York City borough. The Manhattan was the most famous cocktail in the world shortly after it was invented in New York City’s Manhattan Club, some time around the 1870s. As the story goes, it was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall for a banquet hosted Winston Churchill’s mom, in honor of presidential candidate Samuel Tilden. The success of the banquet made the drink fashionable, later prompting several people to request the drink by referring to the name of the club where it originated — “the Manhattan cocktail”.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 oz Whiskey or Whiskey Rye
  • 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • Two dashes of Bitters
  • One dash Orange Bitters
  • Garnish: Brandied Cherry

PREPARATION

Place ice in a cocktail shaker. Add the whiskey, vermouth, and bitters. Rub the orange peel around the rim of the cocktail glass. Add a single ice cube, then strain the drink into the glass. Add 1 to 2 Real Maraschino Cherries and enjoy!
