Irish Coffee

Quick Facts

Cocktail History

Irish coffee is a cocktail consisting of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugar that’s stirred and topped with cream. This classic cocktail dates back at least 100 years but was first introduced to the United States in the 1950s by travel writer, Stanton Delaplane, who wrote for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ oz Irish Whiskey
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 5 oz Hot Coffee
  • 1 Teaspoon White Sugar
  • ¼ cup whipped cream

Cocktail Preparation

Place sugar on a plate or shallow bowl. Lightly wet the rim of an Irish coffee glass with a moistened paper towel. Dip the rim in sugar to coat. Pour Irish whiskey into the prepared glass. Fill with coffee to within 1/2 inch of top. Add sugar and stir. Top with whipped cream.
