Highball

Quick Facts

Cocktail History

Highball is a classic cocktail with an interesting and mysterious history. It is composed simply of whiskey and a mixer, typically a carbonated beverage like seltzer or ginger ale, but it has been around for many generations. Highball cocktails can be traced back to Scotland, where they were originally made with whisky and soda water. Since then the Highball has become popular throughout the world as an easily adapted, refreshing drink. Highball also stands out due to its unique name; many believe Highball was named after train conductors who used to draw signals by throwing balls in the air–a “high ball”–to indicate trains could move at full speed. Thus Highball availed itself as a perfect metaphor for such a spirit-lifting libation!
